Backpacking Tent Fundamentals

Tent Weight and Size The qualities desirable in a back packing tent are dissimilar from those tents being pitched next to a vehicle in a campground.

The most important difference being the back packing tent will be carried with you and, should be tiny and lightweight. Most modern 2 person tents weight around 4 to 5 lbs. While a spacious family camping tent can weigh 20 lbs or more. Solo or single person tents can weigh less than 3 lbs and are nice if you are hiking alone.

Tent Quality the standard of the tent is more critical when backpacking because there's sometimes nowhere dry to go if the tent starts leaking. Being exhausted, wet, and cold knowing the following dry place is at least 10 miles away on a rocky trail will speedily put a damper on what should ideally be a pleasurable outside experience. Clips and Sleeves There are two common strategies that tent poles are attached to the tent. One is using sleeves the poles slide thru and the other is using clips that latch over the poles. Some tents even use a mix of clips and sleeves. Sometimes, clip based designs are less complicated and faster to line up, while sleeve based designs are stronger and can be simply mended with a needle and thread right at the camp site.

For most conditions, I suspect the clips are lots robust and are often better due to how fast they permit the tent to be set up and dismantled. Free Standing and Staked Designs Free standing tents became the standard. Their first advantage is they can be set up without being staked into the ground. Stakes are still necessary to keep the tent from blowing around, but the stakes customarily do not have to be driven far into the ground. Staked tents have a tendency to be a bit lighter than free standing tents, but have to be staked solidly into the ground to hold their shape. I have become a convert from staked tents to freestanding tents after bending multiple tent pegs beyond fix trying to pitch the tent on hard rocky ground. Though they are a little heavier than their single walled opposite numbers and take a bit longer to line up, they are often less pricey, hotter, and hold up better in wet conditions. While the lower weight specs and little packing size of the single wall tents make them engaging, the double wall tents are often a superior deal economically. 4 season tents are constructed from heavier materials to hold up against the winter weather and are bulkier and harder to hold. Some makers provide a 3+ season tent if you are camping early in the Spring or late in the autumn, but unless you are planning in particular to camp in the wintertime months a three season tent is more than adequate without unwarranted bulk and weight. Foyers if you do not have room to keep your shoes in the tent with you, foyers are an excellent spot to keep them dry and yet outside of the main tent. I myself enjoy feeling the breeze from a hurricane while I am dry within the tent. The general public probably would not consider the vestibule worth the weight, but they're a nice luxury.

Conclusions While different people will select different tents based totally on diverse factors, understanding the elementals differences between tents will help you pick the tent design that fits your hiking style and conditions.
