Getting The Right Sleeping Bag For You

Going camping? Need to buy a sleeping bag? Here are some pointers that may help you decide on the best one to fit your wishes.

Shape and Design

One of the first issues is the shape and design of the sleeping bag. The standard sleeping bag is a straightforward rectangle, sometimes with a zip running up one side. This permits it to more effectively keep body heat. There also are variations of the 2 major design shapes, designed for varied purposes.

Fill and Insulation

Sleeping bags are often stuffed with down, or some manmade material. Down filled sleeping bags are often hotter. Manmade sleeping bags are usually less costly than down filled bags, and perform far better in wet conditions. They don't readily absorb water, and still offer some insulation even if they do.

Wool and cotton are also occasionally used for insulation. Wool performs well, but is heavy. Both wool and cotton are most fitted for still, protected camping, eg: in a country cabin, where their downsides to not matter.

Temperature Ratings

Most sleeping bags are given a uniform rating to help work out what temperature and weather they are OK for. For EU sleeping bags, they are rated using the EN 13537 standard. This standard uses 4 separate ratings : Higher limit the highest temperature a median man can sleep at without over the top sweating

Comfort the most snug temperature for the average girl. Lower limit the lowest temperature at that the average man can sleep eight hours ( curled up ) without waking.

Intense the minimum temperature that the average girl can stay in the bag for 6 hours without a degree of risk of death ( frostbite may still happen ). If a sleeping bag only gives a minimum temperature, it is perhaps the Lower limit rating.
